Safer Gambling
Problem gambling can develop quietly and affect anyone, regardless of background or experience. As an information resource, we believe it’s important to understand the signs and know where support is available, especially if you’re based in Great Britain.
Recognising the warning signs
Some patterns can indicate that gambling is becoming problematic. These include spending more time or money than intended, chasing losses by gambling more to try to recover what you’ve spent, or continuing to gamble despite harm to relationships, work, or finances. Other red flags are hiding gambling activity, borrowing money to fund it, or feeling anxious when unable to gamble. If these sound familiar—whether in your own behaviour or someone close to you—it’s worth reaching out for support.
When to seek help
You don’t need to wait until a situation feels critical. Support services are designed to help at any stage, and many people find that getting advice early makes a real difference. Help is also available if you’re concerned about someone else’s gambling.
Tools and resources in Great Britain
The UK has established several systems specifically to help people manage their gambling safely.
Self-exclusion and operator-level controls
If you decide to stop gambling temporarily or permanently, self-exclusion schemes let you block your own access. The national self-exclusion programme, GAMSTOP, allows you to register once and restrict access to online gambling operators licensed in the UK for periods ranging from six months to several years. This restriction is enforced across participating operators and cannot be reversed during your chosen period—a safeguard designed to protect against impulsive decisions. Most online operators also allow you to set deposit limits, time-out periods, or account closures within their own platforms.
National support services
The National Gambling Helpline operates around the clock to provide free, confidential support. In England and Scotland, you can reach them at 0808 8020 133, and in Wales at 0808 2819 265. If you prefer not to call, advisers are available through their website chat service as well. Interpreters are available in over 200 languages. GamCare, which runs the helpline, also offers counselling services across the country and a support finder tool to connect you with local resources in your area.
Additional organisations like GambleAware and the Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust provide information, research, and preventative support. Gordon Moody offers a national network of counselling services for those seeking more intensive help.
Regulatory oversight
The UK Gambling Commission regulates all online gambling operators licenced to serve the British market. The operator of the platform you’re visiting—if licensed in the UK—is required to contribute financially to problem gambling prevention and treatment services. Information about any operator’s specific licence and regulatory status can be verified through the Gambling Commission’s registry.
